This is a rare opportunity to own an matching and early (1940) Mauser 98k built in the Mauser Borsigwalde plant (Code 243).  The family legend says that this rifle was taken as a souvenir by a man stationed in North Africa. So there is the possibility that this rifle saw service with the legendary German Afrika Corp!  Though the old saying goes buy the rifle not the story.... So lets take a look at the rifle....
This is an early 1940 dated rifle with serial number 8843.  The numbers match on all the numbered parts of this rifle right down to the action screws.  The stock shows an eagle over an "L" indicating issue to the Luftwaffe and the rifle includes the original sling!
This rifle remains un-messed with, and has had no enhancements or refinishing.  The stock has the original German applied stained and oiled finish and shows all the proper nazi markings and numbers, though they are a bit hard to see and lightly stamped.  But considering the rifle saw service use, this is a common condition.    The bore on this rifle is bright, shiny and sharp, with no issues, and will make a great shooter.  The stock has had a duffle bag cut.... This often was done by GI's to make the rifle parts fit inside a duffle bag so it could be shipped home.  The cut was made under the rear barrel band, and has since been repaired with glued in dowel rods, and with the band in place this repair is invisible like was intended!
As you can see in the pictures the bluing on the exposed areas has gone thin, and this is consistent to service in Africa as was indicated, as the sand and climate often wore away bluing.  Despite the lack of bluing on exposed areas there is no pitting or other rust related damage.  The only flaw to this rifle we can point to is that the firing pin itself does not match the rifle, though all the other bolt parts do match, so this was certainly a war time german repair, and as such would be considered original to the rifle.  All in all this is a very hard to find early example of a classic WW2 German 98k Rifle!
