Talk about dripping with history!!!!   At the beginning of WW2, after overrunning Poland, the Germans captured thousands of Polish weapons, and also the parts in the works at the Polish arsenals to make more.  Not being shy, the Germans helped themselves to these parts and funneled them into the German arsenal system.  This rifle is one of the products of those events.
Assembled at the German controlled Austrian Steyr Works plant, this riofle was built using a Polish Made receiver and other small parts.  Designating this is the tiny eagle & 77 Waffenampt inspection stamp on the side of receiver, and the side rail marking of "G29/40".  The German secret code of "660" and the date of "1940" appear on the top of the receiver.  For all practical purposes though, this variation of mauser is in the traditional German WW2 98k pattern in every other way.

At the end of WW2 the Soviet Union had millions of WW2 German weapons under their control.  Many were later used and issued to various Soviet troops and communist nations.  In later years these weapons were rebuilt under the Soviet Arsenal system, and stored away for future use.  When the Soviet Union fell apart, many of these German Mauser k98 rifles were sold as surplus to the US market.  This is one of those rifles.

This rifle was rebuilt by the Russians.  During these rebuilds, the rifles were disassembled, sorted, inspected, and the best parts reassembled into a functioning rifle.  The Russians did not bother to keep the original German parts and matching part numbers together.  At the end of the rebuild process, the newly assembled rifles were electro-penciled with matching numbers.  This example is all matching to the Russian numbers, has a very nice bright shiny and strong bore, and has the usual Russian rebluing.   This rifle is from an early batch of imports from the 1990's and has the discreet tiny import marking on the bottom of the muzzle end of the barrel.  It has not been shot since importation, and is still in all of it's Soviet Era trim.  A really nice example of the classic WW2 German rifle, with an interesting addition of an unusual pre war and post war history!
